ETA 20 km subestima o tempo de vida dos VCANS, nas previs{\~o}es

as previs{\~o}es de 72 h. Ao contr{\'a}rio, o ETA aparenta
dispersar os VCANs, de forma homog{\^e}nea, em torno da
posi{\c{c}}{\~a}o analisada. O modelo ETA 20 km subestima a
A partir das an{\'a}lises do
modelo observou-se que os VCANs apresentaram uma m{\'a}xima
inclina{\c{c}}{\~a}o de 6\$^{°}\$ (longitude ou latitude) do

verified whether the ETA 20 km regional model, used at CPTEC/INPE,
is able to predict the lifetime, position, depth, displacement and
the intensity of the Upper Level Cyclonic Vortex (ULCV) occurring
at Northeast Brazil (NEB). The objective method proposed by
Coutinho in 2008 was applied to indentify the ULCV in the analysis
and in the model forecasts up to 72 h. However, modifications were
made in the method so that it could identify ULCVs in all model
outputs because the horizontal resolution of this study data is
different from the one to which the method was initially proposed.
The study was conducted focusing on the NEB region in the area
bounded at 2\$^{°}\$N - 25,8\$^{°}\$S latitude and
60\$^{°}\$W - 25,8\$^{°}\$W longitude and for the period from
January 2008 to December 2011. The results showed that ETA 20 km
underestimates the lifetime of ULCV by delaying its formations and
anticipating their dissipation in the forecasts up to 72 h. The
number of ULCVs events was also underestimated for the three
considered time forecasts. The model predicted the ULCV track, but
within a maximum of 10\$^{º}\$ latitudinal and/or longitudinal
shifting. The ETA model tends to position the ULCVs to northeast
of the 24 and 48 h analyzed forecasts, while no positioning trend
in the 72 h forecasts is seen. Instead, ETA seems to disperse
ULCVs homogeneously around the analyzed position. The ETA 20 km
model underestimates the ULCV intensities, for the three
integration times, with greatest underestimation for 48 hours
forecast. The ETA 20 km model has shown a good performance in
predicting ULCVs depth, distinguishing between the shallower and
deeper episodes. From the model analysis it is seen that the ULCVs
had a maximum vertical inclination of 6\$^{°}\$ (longitude or
latitude) of its central location at a higher level with respect
to its position at a lower level, besides having a top height
occurring with higher frequency at 200 hPa level.",
